Head Health Network, a concussion care provider for numerous university and high school athletic programs, currently offers the only comprehensive service for contact sports that includes integrated impact monitoring, physical and cognitive assessments, and access to medical professionals. With a rapidly growing
customer base, HHN relied on Sparkhound’s expertise to scale processing capabilities and ensure reliable performance of its concussion data and analytics platform.
Challenge
Server-Centric Environment Restricted Growth and Expansion of Services
HHN collects real-time helmet impact data from players using sensors placed between the inside padding and outside shell of a helmet. These sensors wirelessly transmit data to a server on the sidelines, where it’s uploaded to the cloud for processing and then presented through dashboard displays and daily reports for coaches and medical professionals.
As more high schools and universities adopted the platform, the HHN system struggled with the increased number of simultaneous users, causing delays in real-time notifications. HHN needed to rapidly process raw data from helmet sensors in the cloud to support real-time reporting and sideline evaluations.
Solution
Transition to Cloud Platform to Support Scalability and Improve Data Speed
To improve data speed and network scalability, Sparkhound partnered with HHN to establish an Azure cloud platform utilizing Queue Storage, Queue-Web-Worker, and Azure Virtual Servers. Migrating from a server-centric to a cloud-based environment improved compute performance, increased workload capabilities, and enabled instant
scalability to meet game-day demands.
Sparkhound also developed a mobile application that allowed HHN to deliver real-time, easily digestible data and push notifications directly to coaches and medical staff on the sidelines. The app was quickly adopted by many of HHN’s clients for practices and daily training sessions.
